How to Ride

Your step-by-step guide to riding RTA with confidence.

New Rider Guide

Riding RTA is easy

Everything a first-time rider needs to board, pay and transfer with confidence.

1. Find your route

Use the trip planner or routes page to choose a route and stop near you.

2. Check the schedule

See live arrivals on the bus tracker or in the Transit app, or check your route’s schedule.

3. Pay your fare

Pay the driver, or buy a mobile ticket in the Transit app and scan your phone as you board.

4. Board & ride

Wave to signal the driver, board at the front, and enjoy the ride.

Boarding & etiquette

  • Arrive at your stop 5–10 minutes early so the bus doesn’t miss you.
  • Have your fare ready as the bus approaches. Pay when you board, then take a seat.
  • Priority seating near the front is reserved for seniors and riders with disabilities.
  • Strollers should be folded; secure large items so aisles stay clear.
  • Signal the driver by pressing the stop strip before your destination.

Rider rules

  • No eating, drinking or smoking on the bus.
  • Use earphones if you listen to music or watch videos.

Student pass holders agree to these rules when they use their pass.

Reading a schedule

  1. Choose the schedule for your day of travel: Monday – Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
  2. Find the timepoints closest to where you start and where you are going. Schedules list timepoints, not every stop.
  3. Read down from your timepoint to see when buses leave it. Times in bold are PM.

Every route schedule is on Routes & Schedules.

Accessibility on board

Every RTA bus is ADA-accessible with a ramp or lift, kneeling capability and securement areas for mobility devices. Drivers are trained to assist. For door-to-door service, see RTA Mobility.
